Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. He had nine siblings; [from oldest to youngest] Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, Peter, Unnamed [died at birth], Lucy, Anna, and Randolph. His parents were Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. Thomas later married Martha Wayles Skelton who had one son, John, from previous marriage to Bathurst Skelton. Together, Thomas and Martha had five daughters and a son who died soon after birth. Their daughters name [from eldest to youngest] were Martha [known as Patsy], Jane , Mary [known as Polly], Lucy Elizabeth [died within a year], and Lucy Elizabeth. During Martha's last child birth, she had gotten very ill and died September 6, 1782. Jefferson was hit hard by her death. Before she died, Martha made him promise to never marry again so her kids wouldn't have a stepmother. History would show that Jefferson had significant others but never married again! In an attempt to become happier, he and his daughter Patsy [Martha] moved to Europe for one of his political positions.
